Epic Destinations For Elephant Safaris in Africa (2024)

Elephant safaris are very popular tours in many parts of Africa where elephants roam freely in the wild. These safaris allow tourists to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures, observe their natural behaviour, and learn about their habitats and conservation efforts.

It’s important to note that while elephant safaris can be a thrilling and unforgettable experience, it’s important to choose a responsible tour operator that puts the welfare of the animals first. Elephants are intelligent and sensitive creatures that can experience stress in captivity or if they are disturbed in their natural habitat.

Elephant Safaris in South Africa

South Africa is a famous destination for elephant safaris due to its abundant wildlife and numerous game reserves. Moriti operates in four of the best game reserves in the whole of Africa where our favourite grey wrinkly beasts are found and protected.

The following reserves are our absolute favourites, you can visit them with us if you want.

The first and most obvious is Kruger National Park. It is home to over 25,000 elephants. Adjoining the national park is what we affectionately call Greater Kruger Park. This area is made up of all the private game reserves like Sabi Sands and Timbavati and, just like the national park, these places have some amazing elephant sightings.

In Kwa-Zulu Natal, two reserves stand out for some awesome elephant safaris. These are Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park and Phinda Private Game Reserve. These reserves are not well-known but let us tell you something, they are absolute gems and in some cases, offer a better overall experience than Kruger Park… Check them out if you can.

Below are our best elephant safaris in South Africa. All are customisable and perfect for any occasion.

Elephant Safaris in Botswana

Northern Botswana is one of the finest places to see elephants in Africa.

There are numerous national parks and reserves across the African continent with their fair share of elephants.

The destination on everyone’s mind for elephant sightings is Linyanti or Savuti Marsh. This wildlife paradise includes the Chobe National Park and Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. Its population of elephants is particularly impressive, exceeding over 45,000 and making it one of the largest elephant populations in Africa!

During the dry season (annual flood of the delta) from April to August, The Okavango Delta offers people some of the best elephant viewings you could ever experience! It is why documentary crews go there year after year. It can be overwhelming seeing these animals so happy in a water wonderland like The Okavango!

Below are our best elephant safaris in Botswana. All can be tailored to your needs, whether it be for couples, families or groups of mates.

Elephant Safaris in Zimbabwe and Zambia

As far as Zambia goes, South Luangwa Park is home to the bulk of Zambia’s elephants supporting over 14,000 elephants. You are likely to see large elephant herds roaming free on safari here. Along the Zambezi River, close to Victoria Falls is also a great place to spot elephants as well in this small, but very beautiful country.

However, the winner in this regard has to go to Zimbabwe. Just within Hwange National Park in the dry season (May-October), there can be as many as 50-60,000 elephants! We have experienced sundowners where elephants outnumber any other animal or bird on the landscape at that moment. In addition, watching elephants stand up in front of trees to reach fruit and leaves in the postcard that is Mana Pools National Park is a sight to behold.

Below are our best elephant safaris in Zimbabwe and Zambia. All can be built around your needs and in fact, we prefer it that way because it means you get your very own safari to brag about!
